While yet a student he had been inducted, in the service of his monarch and the defence of true religion, into a murky world of deceit, betrayal and role-playing, where the pretence of converting to the enemy’s beliefs may have taught him how easily interchangeable they were with the ones he was being paid to defend. The name of Lightborne in Edward II, and his dissembling expressions of concern (reminiscent, perhaps, of the handling of the Babington conspirators by Marlowe’s acquaintance Robert Poley),3 might be taken to suggest that the poet recognized the demonic character of those whose double role was to incite subversion and to stand as its accuser.
