The first challenge pertains to the types of historical sources available to a political theorist. Compared to most studies in political theory, one does not have ample access to a diversity of texts and authors, nor an abundance of historical evidence surrounding particular texts and authors, during the time period under study in this project. 2 Lacking a variety of precisely datable texts and accurate historical accounts, 3 Introduction • 3 there is a difficulty in placing works on a finely tuned chronological spectrum.

Along these lines, the rule of connectedness proves an invaluable resource for thinking about our political orientation toward nonhuman nature. Finally, my position intersects with various postmodern and critical theory positions in positing a porous human‒nonhuman conception of identity, the role of nonhuman agency, and material flows that provide a basis for the integrity of intertwined human‒nonhuman welfare. At this point it may be helpful to clarify how my theorization and defense of rule cohere with the consequentialist argument I put forth in the Preface.

Such bifurcations introduce a parallel and primordial hierarchical relation of ruling-over between the male and female genders. One might surmise that Greek rulers’ attempts to distinguish themselves hierarchically over others indicates an urge to recreate, or perhaps mimic, what they took to be the broader yet gendered cosmological relationship between sky and earth. This hierarchical orientation then maps onto what Greek rulers would consider a pernicious gender relationship because it is a sign of weakness to be subjugated to someone or something else.
