60 Very little work has been done by researchers working within the transnational perspective on how the regulation of gender, sexuality, and reproduction differs in these two geographically separate places that are part of the same social space. S. 61 The women I interviewed in Atlanta shared many beliefs and ideals with their sisters and sisters-in-law in Mexico, but their economic and social contexts were very different. This study examines the consequences of those differences for how women think about and use their bodies.

A sampling theory is fundamentally an epistemology. To extrapolate from information gathered from some reduced number of group members to the whole group, one must have a theory about the relationship between the group and the individual members. The intellectual traditions of ethnography and demography have distinct assumptions about that relationship. Demographic sampling is universalizing and individually oriented. To construct a sample for a demographic survey, one begins with certain a priori categories, such as race 32 Introduction or ethnicity, sex, and age.

On the eastern edge of town, beyond the cemetery and the soccer field, is a flat expanse filled with brickworks, where men make bricks from mud, straw, and horse dung.
